I had a chance last week to visit Egypt for a few days to see some friends that were also there at the time. It also happened to be my first time there, not sure what has taken me so long to start getting around Africa now (planning a big trip to south east later this year as well). The flight was crazy cheap, around $250, or the same to go from Chicago to NYC.
We toured the older parts of Cairo, the Islamic and Coptic areas, as well as the more informal areas, such as Garbage city and City of the Dead. Each were equally cool in their own way. We also managed to make it up to Alexandria for a day via train, which was great by by the Sea. Alexandria has a totally different vibe than Cairo, way more relaxed and easy going.
There are of course way bigger issues that are going on in Egypt now, the recent change in government. And the security concerns in Sinai. I'll skip talking about these until I become a bit more knowledgeable in those areas.

A huge gathering of people outside a mosque. Ramadan = people shopping all night and smoking shisha til 5am.
